A bunch of footage from screening tests went foul for the new upcoming movie Star Wars Rogue One. The Disney executives are not happy with the results the directors and producers have been filming for the past few months. The Star Wars spin-off seems to be in a crisis because now the executives want reshoots. According to Page Six, the anticipated movie will be released on December 16th, however the Disney bosses are not fully satisfied with the first cut from director Gareth Edwards.
The franchise’s first spinoff film will take us back in time to a point between Episodes III and IV. The plot reportedly sees resistance fighters embark on a daring mission to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor’s cruel rule. However, the point of this spin-off is that it will contain a complete story without spreading plot points and mysteries like the trilogy would traditionally do.
The format of the movie is completely new. Disney doesn’t want Rogue One to slip under The Force Awakens as a disappointment. So, in hopes of regaining approval from the executives, the directors and producers of the movie will continue to reshoot up to four weeks of film in the July to not disappoint its viewers in December.
“The filmmaking team and the studio always anticipated additional shooting and second unit work to make the film the absolute best it can be, and the actors were aware there would be additional shooting,” said a Disney source. “Coming off ‘The Force Awakens,’ there’s an incredibly high bar for this movie and we have a responsibility to the franchise and to the fans to deliver the best possible movie we can.”
According to Cinemablend, these spin-off movies will be released yearly . The goal of these spin-offs however isn’t to add a new chapter. These are just spin-off, excerpts in between movies that add background information for the Star Wars fans. So since Star Wars: Episode VII came out in 2015, now a spin-off, Rogue One, will come out in late 2016. The plan is to eventually release Episode VIII in 2017 with the second spin-off in 2018, along with Episode IX in 2019, and the third spin-off in 2020. However, the first spin-off is already going into a rocky start, so plans may change for the Star Wars franchise as time moves on.
In Star Wars Rogue One, the addition of new characters into the scene is quite perplexing. It will feature a new cast that will mainly have to stand on their own, including actors such as Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker and Diego Luna. This new Disney’s Rogue One are veteran actors in comparison to the actors that played Rey, Finn and Poe in The Force Awakens. They will certainly have the talent, but if the characters we do know a love, old or new, aren’t in there, then it could end up backfiring.
