While the 80’s were a powerful time for Bowie as he rose out of the depths of drug-addiction and a failed marriage, the era of the New Romantics was coming to a close, as was his time as a pop icon. He began feeling that it was once again time for a change, and that change was heralded by the close of his solo career, perhaps longing for the lack of visibility that can come when you’re not the heart of the band. He and three other talented musicians, Reeves Gabrels, and Tony and Hunt Sales came together to create Tin Machine. Tony and Hunt had worked with him during his days with Iggy Pop on the hit album Lust for Life and he respected their work enough to work with them again.

But it wasn't that easy
